Dry storage done right – 1998, 2004, 2007 Sheng Puerh tea adventure

Clear

Description

This is Dry Storage Done Right: sheng puerh stored dry enough to preserve all of its complexity, and yet transformed enough to be also smooth!

These 3 teas are the best that ‘flavour’ tea (like oolongs) have to offer, combined with the depth of properly aged puerh, really some of the finest tea in the world. They’re still floral, have many layers, deep deep aftertaste and mouth feel, and none of what we generally consider unpleasant in young sheng puerh (mainly overwhelming astringency and rough throat feelings)

If you’ve never understood why you might want dry storage or have a suspicion it could be great but haven’t tried actually great dry stored sheng puerh, this tea adventure is for you.

Dry storage is rarely done well enough, and when it’s done well, people tend to keep these teas for themselves and not share them. What usually reaches the market is more-or-less failed experiments.

I had been wanting to offer this for a long time but it took a lot of trying many cakes of sheng puerh that is still too astringent or had gone green-yellow to finally find these 3 gems. I hope it will help further your appreciation of different storage types.

To learn more about dry and traditional storage we also available a sample of the same cake (produced in 2 different years), one stored dry and one stored more humid: Mystic wood dry and natural storage. If you don’t have it already, you may want to add a sample of it to further your understanding.

If you are going to drink them together, start with 2004-2007 and end with the 1998.

2007 Yiwu Mahei – Taiwan dry storage (400g cake)

Obvious ancient tree material (due to intensity of flavour and how many steepings it goes on for), when drinking this I surprised myself joy uttering at how good it is.

Mahei being a famous village in Yiwu. This is the cake with “Everlasting” on the wrapper, and is produced by Master He Tianpei. Please excuse the lighting on the picture of the inside of the cake, it’s a bit dark.

* Full cake marked as in-stock but delivery time may be up to 3 weeks and/or being sent directly from Taiwan. Our pricing is much below market price and the storage is obviously excellent.

2004 Chen Yuan Hao Yiwu Zhengshan – Taiwan dry storage (357g cake)

Despite being 3 years older, it feels a tiny bit less aged than the 2007, it’s a bit thicker and it’s got more of a (pleasant) astringency bite. Intense salivation.

Instantly satisfying from the first steeping, the liquor has an ethereal quality because it’s quite clear and yet it has thick sweetness on the mouth that again has me smiling in joy at the beauty of it.

This is the cake with the blank wrapper. Chen Yuan Hao is a famous boutique puerh brand. Please excuse the lighting on the picture of the inside of the cake, it’s a bit dark.

* Full cake marked as in-stock but delivery time may be up to 3 weeks and/or being sent directly from Taiwan. Our pricing is much below market price and the storage is obviously excellent.

1998 Xiaguan Iron Cake 8653 – US dry storage (357g cake)

I bet this is a surprise… what’s this famous factory cake doing with the two boutique gushu cakes?

Particularly iron cakes, because of their tight compression, are generally subjected to quite humid traditional storage to help them express their potential more (more details on this on the Xiaguan 8653 Iron Cakes Tea Adventure which features traditionally stored iron cakes)

Thanks to a generous collector friend of ours (the same that provided the 1960 loose leaf sheng puerh) we can offer a very rare example of dry storage done completely in the west! He bought tongs of this tea directly in 1998 and stored them himself until now.

The combination of the tight compression and dry storage make a super interesting and complex brew. This is one of the oldest examples of western dry storage, and I believe the oldest available to purchase online.

I’ll leave this one without personal comment because it’s obviously different from the other two, and yet you’ll notice some similarities too.

Picture of the inside of the cake not yet available, the wrapper is the normal Xiaguan T8653 one.

If you are not familiar with iron cakes, I suggest you also purchase a sample of Xiaguan 8653 Iron Cakes Tea Adventure to see what’s so different in this one.

* Sorry, full cake not available online but if you’re dying for it send an email and we’ll see if we can work out something for you. For reference, 2001 version with traditional storage is sold online at $450-600, this is better storage and older. Our pricing is still well below market price.

Aging potential

If you love any of these 3 tea, it’s worth buying a tong to keep on dry storing, it’ll only get better and be a proper treasure in its own right. This is the kind of well stored tea that’s rare enough at this age, and becomes harder and pricier to buy the older it gets.

Shoot us on email (after you’ve tried a sample) if you’re interested in a tong (it may or may not be available).
