King and Queen – 2010 and 2011 Chen Sheng Hao Sheng Puerh tea adventure
This tea adventure features two of the best early 2010s sheng puerh from old trees available, both from the very well regarded Chen Sheng Hao (CSH) brand.
Both with taiwanese dry storage, their character is completely opposite and it makes for a very interesting comparison and learning experience. Just by smelling at the dry and wet leaf you can immediately notice how concentrated and great these teas are. Both have deep smell in the cup and aftertaste in mouth as well.
With two great examples on the opposite ends of the scale, you really will find out what kind of tea you prefer and adjust what tea you look for in the future. I strongly recommend buying at least 10g of this.
I think most people will like one of the two teas very, very much and the other one not so much, but that’s the point of this tea adventure.
If you are going to drink them together, drink The Queen first, as the King’s flavour is so strong it may be hard to feel anything else after drinking it.
The King: 2011 Chen Sheng Hao Emperor Green Cake (“Ba Wang Qing Bing”) – 400g cake
Bitter (but not very astringent), strong, thick, strong huigan (returning sweetness). Immediate Qi, I felt my body so much stronger in one cup. Powerfully energizing. Lots of steepings.
Menghai material with a character like Banzhang or Lao Man E, harvested at 1800 meter altitude so very clean and no pesticides, this is really concentrated “masculine” tea. While this is not Banzhang proper, this is one of the closest you’ll get (at less than $1000 a cake).
This cake sells on the producers website for $544 (!). We have a much lower price but we only have a few for sale. I think this would also be a great candidate for further aging (dry or natural), the fact that it’s a blend and has all this strength that should transform very, very nicely makes it a strong candidate to be a timeless classic.
* Samples ship from UK, full cake marked as in-stock but delivery time may be up to 2 weeks and/or being sent directly from Taiwan.
The Queen: 2010 Chen Sheng Hao “Fu Yuan Chang Hao” Yiwu – 250g brick
Classic thick Yiwu, just a hint of astringency but so much sweetness that goes on forever (15+ steepings? not sure, I lost count).
Dreamy sweet Qi and flavour, this reminds me of some of our older yiwu cakes but keeps the “top notes” (mostly floral) intact. I’m personally a fan of this tea and it may be the most pleasurable 2010s sheng puerh I ever drank.
This brick sells elsewhere online for $300 (!). We have good availability for now. I’m saving quite a lot of this for myself in the future to keep on dry-storing, best tea I personally found from 2010s (I generally only drink older sheng).
* Samples ship from UK, full bricks can ship from UK from mid-july or can be sent directly from Taiwan.
